What is PSC Cement?

PSC (Portland Slag Cement) is a blended cement made by grinding Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) clinker with granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS).
The slag is a by-product of the steel industry, making PSC environment-friendly and durable.

In India, PSC is manufactured as per IS 455.

Key Characteristics of PSC Cement

Lower heat of hydration → fewer cracks

High durability

Excellent resistance to sulphates & chlorides

Better long-term strength gain

Smooth finish

Eco-friendly (uses industrial waste)

PSC Cement – Major Uses

1. Coastal & Marine Structures

Sea-facing buildings

Ports & harbours

Jetties, wharfs

Coastal foundations
➡️ Resists saltwater corrosion.

✅ 2. Mass Concrete Works

Dams

Rafts & mat foundations

Large footings
➡️ Low heat generation prevents thermal cracking.

3. Underground & Water-Retaining Structures

Basements

Sewage treatment plants

Water tanks

Retaining walls

➡️ Highly resistant to chemical attack.

✅ 4. RCC Construction (General)

Columns, beams, slabs

Foundations

➡️ Provides long-term strength and durability.

✅ 5. Industrial & Chemical Exposure Areas

Factories

Effluent plants

Fertilizer and chemical units

➡️ Withstands aggressive environments better than OPC.

Where PSC Cement is Less Suitable

❌ Works requiring very high early strength (fast construction)
❌ Cold weather concreting without proper curing

➡️ OPC 53 performs better for early strength.
